LEVEL 1

Step 1: Watch my intro video! When you’re done, color in this circle on your game board.

Step 2: Head over to Khan Academy to get started on this part of the level. There are two “lessons” for this level on Khan Academy. The first one is called “Fraction Basics” and the second one is called “What Fractions Mean.” For each lesson, you’ll watch a series of videos and then complete some practice assignments. As you complete each item, color in these circles on your game board.

Update: it’s harder than I thought to tell when you’re done with all the videos and practice assignments. You’ll know you’re done with all four circles on your game board when everything ahead of quiz 1 is marked “completed” on your assignments page.

Here’s the link to Khan Academy: https://www.khanacademy.org/. Don’t forget that your username and password are on your game board and inside the cover of your math notebook.

DO NOT TAKE THE LEVEL 1 QUIZ YET!

Step 3: Stop! Take a moment to reflect on what you’ve learned so far. Is anything confusing? If so, go back and rewatch videos. Did you miss out on some points on Khan Academy because you missed a question? Go back and redo the assignments to get maximum points. Color in this circle once you’re ready to move on.

Step 4: Complete the required practice assignment for this level and one optional practice assignment. These are labeled in the file organizer. Once completed, please turn them in to Mrs. Pippitt’s blue hand in tray and color in this circle on your game board. If you have any questions about the assignment ask a friend (quietly) or Mrs. Pippitt. If you feel you could use extra practice, consider doing another optional assignment.

Step 5: For the level 1 activity, you’ll be making your own set of fraction strips. First, you’ll get the fraction strips handout and an envelope from the file organizer. Next, color each fraction strip a different color. (For example, all the thirds are blue and all the fifths are red.) Then, cut these out and put them in the envelope. Label the envelope with your name. You may use these fraction strips throughout the game whenever you think a visual aid might help you. In addition, Mrs. Pippitt might ask you bring them to her table for a mini-lesson. Color in this circle on your game board once the activity is complete!

Step 6: Stop again! Take one more moment to reflect on what you’ve learned so far. Is anything still confusing? If so, go back and rewatch videos. Talk to Mrs. Pippitt. Do another optional assignment. Ask a friend for help. Make sure you are ready for the quiz before heading back to Khan Academy.

Step 7: Take the level 1 quiz on Khan Academy. Color in the circle on your game board when you’ve completed the quiz. If you are struggling to pass the quiz, talk to Mrs. Pippitt.

Step 8: In order to move on to level 2, you’ll need to find Mrs. Pippitt for the clue to the level 2 password. Color in this circle, then fill in the password on your game board before moving on to level 2.
